An Oatley couple who lent a book to a friend more than twenty years ago have kept its space in their book case in the same condition as the day it went missing just in case it returns one day.
“I lent our copy of Clive James’s Unreliable Memoirs to our friend Marty back in 1993 because he grew up in Kogarah and I thought he might like it,” said Tina Mackerel. “I assumed he’d read it and then return it within a few weeks but the weeks turned into months and the months turned into years… the worst part is just not knowing.”
“We dust the space every day, and make sure that the book next to it, James’s follow up May Week Was In June, hasn’t edged its way into the gap”, said Allan Mackerel. “Occasionally I’ll see a copy of Unreliable Memoirs at a fete and be tempted to buy it but I can’t bring myself to do it. What if our copy comes home and finds this stranger in its place?”
When quizzed about the books whereabouts, last person to see it in an un-dog eared condition Marty Wilson was evasive.
“That bloody book. I don’t know where it is. I’ve moved about seven or eight times and it’s probably in a box somewhere.”
If you have any information about the current location of the Mackerel’s copy of Unreliable Memoirs please contact Senior Detective Roger Blurb at the Office of Missing Books.
