Police have captured a notorious gang of kidnappers after they stayed on the telephone long enough to be tracked down while trying to answer a trivia question about what is the next line of the Don Maclean song American Pie.
“I knew that if we kept them talking for ten minutes we’d be able to trace where the call was coming from,” said senior detective Colin Miller, who was negotiating with the kidnappers of nine year old Daisy Waterhouse. “So I just casually asked if they wanted to play a little game of guess the next line of the song. Then I started singing American Pie and was about seven minutes in when the swat team swooped on the phone booth.”
The kidnappers were engaged in a heated dispute about whether the line was “I went down to the sacred store” or “I went down to the Safeway Store” when apprehended .
“I guess they knew we had a thing for musical trivia when our ransom demands included a million dollars in unmarked notes and a DVD boxed set of the complete Spicks And Specks,” said rueful kidnapper Patrick Hurst. “We would have gotten away with it if he’d picked a much shorter song.”
